With references as far back as the Renaissance with Albrecht Dürer to the Pop sentiment of the ‘80s with his contemporary and friend Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s ‘Self-Portrait as a Heel (Part II)’ confronts ego, id, and superego in a painterly manifesto of the self.

By the time Basquiat painted the artwork in 1982, during a pivotal visit to Los Angeles when he debuted in his first West Coast exhibitions at Larry Gagosian Gallery, he had already arrived at the center of critical acclaim. One of the artist’s only titled self-portraits across the entirety of his brief but legendary career, this monumental masterpiece offers a nuanced glimpse of the young artist’s self-consciousness as he navigated the white, Western, mainstream art world.
