In Manjit Bawa’s ‘Untitled (Shiva)’ from 1995, the god is portrayed as Dakshinamurti—a teacher of yoga, music and wisdom.

Depictions of Shiva typically include a snake wrapped around the god’s neck, but here a small, thin snake wraps around the arm, adding an element of companionship rather than the fervent energy the serpent normally represents. Nandi, the bull vahana (vehicle) of Shiva, sits beside him. The animal’s distant gaze, relaxed ears and tucked tail imbue the scene with a sense of tranquillity, creating a quiet moment in an ethereal, red world.

It will be offered as a highlight of ‘Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art’ at #SothebysLondon on 24 October as part of Islamic, South Asian & Middle Eastern Week. The exhibitions are open to the public until 23 & 24 October—more details at the link in bio.
