Philip Guston’s distinctive approach involved painting close to the canvas, emphasizing tactile physicality and textured impasto as powerful elements in his signature. ‘The Bell’ from 1952 represents a pivotal moment in Guston’s career, as he ventured into abstraction, showcasing his unique style characterized by densely packed brushstrokes and a play between weight and weightlessness.
