As France faces Italy in today’s Rugby World Cup match, we take a close look at André Lhote’s ‘Les Joueurs de rugby’ from 1920. “It is fascinating to capture a moving spectacle by freezing it at its crucial phase,” Lhote said. “At that moment when, like a pendulum at the end of its trajectory, everything seems to become motionless for a second before starting up again in rapid flashes.”

The work will be offered in ‘Modernités’ at #SothebysParis, presented in partnership with @Celine, on 19 October—more details to follow.
