That is where their chicks are born in late winter, and they need to be ready to plunge into the ocean before the ice melts. This used to be in mid summer, but Antarctica’s sea ice is melting faster now because of global warming. Many thousands of Emperor chicks drowned last year when the ice melted before the young birds were ready to go. One scientist predicted recently that 90% of the current emperor population may disappear in our lifetime. I supported a lawsuit by the Center for Biological Diversity against the US government to recognize Emperor penguins as an endangered species. In my testimonial used by the CBD I stated, “Emperor penguins are as vulnerable and as important a symbol for the effects of climate change in Antarctica, as polar bears are for the Arctic." The CBD’s actions pressured the US Fish and Wildlife Service to declare Emperors a threatened species and their needs now have to be taken into account under the Endangered Species Act.
