On 26 April 1986, at 1:23 am, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s reactor #4 blew up after operators had botched a safety test, triggering an explosion and a fire that burned for 10 days. The explosion led to the spread of radioactive particles over tens of thousands of square kilometers and caused massive displacement and uprooting of entire communities, with over a quarter of a million people permanently evacuated from their homes. Despite decades of scientific research and ongoing efforts to manage the aftermath, the long shadow of Chernobyl continues to have far-reaching consequences. On the day of the disaster, children oblivious to the nuclear accident played in this kindergarten of the reactor’s company town, Pripyat.
