I was in Peru for about six months and traveling between Nazca on the coast & Cusco in the Andes. In #Nazca I was working on new research concerning the Nazca Lines, in Cusco I was working on a story about the Inca and some new archaeological sites. I was dealing with two scientific research teams, two different film crews and two different government agencies, not to mention locations that were a 13.7 hour drive and over 400 miles from each other. The best way to travel was to drive, on what I found out was considered one of the most dangerous roads in the world. I think @davidcoventry and I made the drive five times. On one of the trips, bandits tossed a large rock from a tree that over hangs the road, in an effort to slow us down. The wind screen was smashed and we continued driving until we reached Cusco. While I was thinking about my favorite assignment for #NatGeo, Peru came to mind right away. I love the landscape, the history of all the different cultures that have inhabited this fertile landscape. 1) A view from the road from Nazca to Cusco. 2) A group of women and children taking a break at a mountain pass (1400 ft) in the Andes, while on the way to a festival. 3) A view of the Arana (spider), 0ne of the most popular and well defined. The geoglyphs were made in the middle of the desert canvas of the Nazca region between 100 BCE (Before Common ERa) to 800 CE (Common ERA). These were made by removing rocks and dirt from the ground and thus creating different images. The desert floor has had natural weathering that has occurred for thousands of years. Working on over 50 stories and traveling to over 80 countries it has been hard to choose the places and people who have remained with me. The 1st slide in the post, I have no memory of shooting or seeing in my numerous edits of the work.
