Seamlessly combining the artifice of painting with the beauty of the natural world, the practice of creating images on stone supports was originally popularized in Italy during the mid-16th century. Dutch and Flemish artists who settled in Paris revived this tradition in the 18th century, adopting white marble for still-life painting.

Sotheby’s specialist @georginaafhardy shares more on this practice, highlighting a group of paintings by various artists including Iphigénie Decaux, Jan Frans van Dael, Christiaen van Pol and Cornelis van Spaendonck.
