Following a ten-minute bidding battle between four bidders, Gustav Klimt’s final masterpiece ‘Dame mit Fächer’ (Lady with a Fan) established a new auction record for Klimt and became the most valuable work of art ever sold at auction in Europe.
Klimt’s 1917-18 portrait soared above pre-sale expectations, reaching $108.4 million / £85.3 million, which also established it as the second highest price for any portrait ever sold at auction. The work sold to Patti Wong (Founder of Patti Wong & Associates), who was bidding in the saleroom for a Hong Kong collector.
A further six auction records were set during tonight’s sales of Modern & Contemporary art at #SothebysLondon, bringing the combined total to $252.9 million / £199 million, up 34% on last year’s June sales.
