Queen Katherine Parr (1512-1548) was one of the most influential English women of the 16th century. The last of Henry VIII’s six wives, she was a significant presence in the power politics of the latter years of his reign, and a great patron of the arts and educational reform.
Attributed to Master John, this portrait is one of only two surviving near contemporary paintings of Katherine. @andrew.graham.dixon sits down with Sotheby’s specialist @georginaafhardy, who explains how we know she was the sitter.
A highlight of Old Master & 19th Century Paintings Evening Auction at #SothebysLondon on 5 July. It’s on view to the public in our London galleries until 5 July as part of Masters Week—more details at the link in bio.
