This protected area on the coast of Alaska's Kamishak Bay is home to the largest known gatherings of brown bears on Earth, largely on account of its prolific salmon runs. Due to careful management over the past 50 years, the bears at McNeil River have come to view humans as a neutral presence. A state-run permit program allows small groups of visitors to camp in the sanctuary each summer and see these bears in the wild.
