During the warmer months, something strange happens when the tide recedes. Crabs called chigogani begin to dance.

This show is on display in lagoons throughout Yoshino-Kumano National’s tidal flats and sandy beaches such as Miwasaki Beach, Wakayama. This dance is called waving, and is only seen in males. It is thought that the males dance to attract the opposite sex or intimidate members of the same sex, but the root of this behavior is unclear.
