Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s ‘La Liseuse’ was originally owned by Ambroise Vollard, one of the most important art dealers in Paris during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, famed for playing an essential role in the development of modern art. The bold composition, with half of the model’s face concealed beneath her hat, was painted in 1890: an important year for the artist and during a happy period in his life.

This work is a highlight of the Collection of Sir Peter Ustinov (1921-2004), the late Oscar-winning actor, playwright and humanitarian. This summer, Sotheby’s will offer the private collection across two auctions, the first on 6 July and another 30 June – 7 July.
