After an exciting bidding battle during The Now Evening Auction at #SothebysNewYork, a new artist record was set for Nicole Eisenman as ‘Night Studio’ from 2009 sold for $2.4 million—2X its high estimate.

One of 6 new artist auction records set in The Now sale tonight, ‘Night Studio’ stands out among Eisenman’s impressive oeuvre as one of their most important and celebrated paintings and was recently featured in the artist’s traveling European retrospective.

The painting is a lively mix of references, from the fleshy pink figures of Sir Peter Paul Rubens and the saturated yellow of Paul Gauguin, to the art books stacked by the bed. Even the work’s title was drawn from the intimate Philip Guston memoir written by his daughter Musa Mayer.
