Unseen by the public since 1979, René Magritte’s iconic ‘L’Empire des lumières’ from The Mo Ostin Collection achieved an astonishing $42.3 million in a 10-minute back-and-forth bidding battle tonight.

Over many decades of collecting, Ostin sought out magnificent artworks which, just like the music he nurtured as an executive at Warner Bros. Records, were all best in kind.
