Fraught with chilling grandeur, ‘Spider’ from 1996 represents the ultimate embodiment of Louise Bourgeois’ singular contribution to the history of Modern art. Both a formidable predator and an industrious weaver and protectress, the graceful, Gothically arching form of ‘Spider’ invites both awe and anxiety, reverence and reticence, love and fear.

‌Two decades later, her towering Spiders—as Bourgeois described, ‘her most successful subject,’ and the most immediately recognizable of the artist’s signature motifs—stand amongst the most iconic sculptures of the twentieth century, held in the most prestigious museums and private collections worldwide. Acquired the same year it was completed, the 1996 ‘Spider’ comes to auction for the first time from the prestigious collection of Fundação Itaú in São Paulo.
