Depicting a recurring figure within Nara’s iconic repertoire of kawaii characters – a rosy-cheeked young girl – his iconic subject is here depicted with her head wrapped in a bandage, glaring outwards with penetrating emerald eyes. Towering at nearly six-feet-tall, the monumental canvas of ‘Haze Days’ envelopes the central heroine in the serene and mystical depths of Nara’s puddle, one of his earliest and most symbolic motifs that represents, in his words, “a passage that connects the present to the collective realm — a sort of netherworld.” Born of his creative practice spent alone in the studio – painting, smoking, playing music loudly into the twilight hours – the charming figures of his imagination tap into his career-long fascination with the precarious dichotomies between childhood innocence and adult disgruntlement.
