Nowhere is David Hockney’s genius more evident than in his iconic sun-drenched images of swimming pools, which serve as the setting for many of his major paintings of the 1960s and 1970s and are today defining images within the cultural identity of Southern California.
Look closer at ‘Drawing of a Pool and Towel’ from 1967 and you’ll see how Hockney depicts the irresistible poolside atmosphere on paper through saturated color, sinuous lines, and intimate details—like the dappling of small blue marks to the right of the martini glass, suggesting water droplets left behind by a recent swimmer, and the red striped pool towel, beach ball, martini glass, and open book, all alluding to the presence of a sunbathing figure who has just exited the scene.
Currently on view to the public in our Los Angeles galleries, ‘Drawing of a Pool and Towel’ will then head to York Avenue ahead of the Contemporary Evening Auction on 18 May at #SothebysNewYork, presented in partnership with @Celine.
