I guess you could say I’ve been in hibernation. I’ve been busy nurturing two “cubs”. One is my grandson, already 7 months old. The other my book; stay tuned for an important announcement soon. While Anne Lamott’s book is about writing, I find it applies to the chunks of a baby’s routine that unfolds over a day. Feeding, playing, napping. Both tasks require my full immersion. This week I’ve emerged into the beauty that is early spring. Calvin and I are planting seeds, pruning and spending most of our time outside. There is a large antique quilt spread on the lawn strewn with toys, enticing my grandson to get up on his knees and crawl. The lilac bush we planted last year is blooming, my herbs are coming back, the peonies, iris’ and snowdrops are shooting up. It all came pouring out. Not what I wanted to write but obviously needed to write. That’s why it’s taken so long. As those who have read me a long time know, I write in the moment, it’s immediate and always reveal what I am feeling at the time even if I don’t realize that’s what I’m doing. This new draft is optimistic and hopeful, full of exciting and beautiful memories of the last decade of my life. It’s also ripe with possibilities as I enter a new one this June. I will be 70. During this last decade I’ve learned “How to Be Old” and I suspect this next one will be the most beautiful one yet as I see how what we’ve planted since we moved here is becoming more lush and fragrant each year that passes. Where I’ve been.
Last time I posted it was winter and now it is spring.
No Instagram or Substack.

The natural world, my grandson and me I suppose, are in a process of becoming. We are the same but different than we were last year.

Today is my mother’s birthday. She always joked no one could forget it because it was tax day. The first draft of my book, written last year, was full of loss and grief. Of my mother, Accidental Icon as she was, being a professor. It all came pouring out. Not what I wanted to write but obviously needed to write. That’s why it’s taken so long. As those who have read me a long time know, I write in the moment, it’s immediate and always reveal what I am feeling at the time even if I don’t realize that’s what I’m doing. During this last decade I’ve learned “How to Be Old” and I suspect this next one will be the most beautiful one yet as I see how what we’ve planted since we moved here is becoming more lush and fragrant each year that passes.

I’ve missed you and so I want to know, “what’s been blooming for you?”
