Calvin and I were a little ahead of the hipsters who migrated to Williamsburg, Brooklyn during the late 1990’s. We rented a loft in a former burlap bag factory on the South side. We were on the first floor and our loft was two levels as it contained what was formerly the loading dock. We saw the river and the Williamsburg Bridge from our huge window near the kitchen. We smelt the sweet boiling sugar from the Domino Sugar Factory. In our 40’s It felt like a place that was becoming, so were we. My daughter left for college and we had room in our lives to fill. At around the same time I started a Ph.D program and Calvin began an MFA in Creative Writing. My home away from home was the bookstore Spoonbill and Sugartown where I could read about art and whatever postmodern philosopher was captivating me at the moment. Calvin hung out at Main Drag Music with other guitar heads. There were only a few places to eat. Mostly near the Bedford L subway station. There was a performance space called Galapogos, a former mayonnaise factory with a reflecting pool that was our cultural hub. Calvin built a workspace the length of the sunken section of the loft where we worked side by side; alone but together. Bookshelves above went all the way to the 14 foot ceilings. While living there, Calvin named us the vintage hipsters. While we were part of the first wave of gentrifiers, the second overwhelming tide found our small loft building surrounded by much taller ones blocking our view. Mice from all the construction scampered across the wide, pine floor boards at random times of night and day. We sadly left our beloved loft and headed to another site of becoming: Long Island City. Eventually we landed in Manhattan. So here we sit in Peekskill, now in our 60’s and in another place that’s becoming. It will be exciting to see what will become of us here.
