It’s been a real challenge to remain engaged in light of all the war and death that is occurring in the world. I comfort myself with the idea that my horror and anguish about what is happening means I still retain a shred of humanity. My position is simple: I oppose all war and killing. Period. My struggle has been how to live and go on in the face of this incomprehensible disregard for human life. How can I show up as an activist who is 70 years old and lives in an aging body?
For me the answer does not lie here. I find comfort in the words of those who tell me I must imagine the kind of world I want to live in, that I write it and then find my way to live it. What allows me to move out of my house is to start with where I live. I turn to other women activists for advice about how they made meaningful change during older life. The activist Grace Lee Boggs suggests later in her life that our personal philosophy be guided “by the individuals own ability to transform his or her world.” She encourages us to use our imaginations,”if they are rich enough” to create the next and needed revolution. This feels doable to a body that is still strong and healthy but tends to be tired in the afternoons. These are prompts that help me write. What can this little city I live in become? What is already here that makes it so very ripe for imagining? When she was old, Grace decided to write for a small local newspaper in Detroit. I will write for ours. I will write about the issues that connect us as diverse people across the many generations that live here. I’ll write how to be old here, and about what we may need to do so everyone has what they need well before they are old so they may even live long enough to become old, in a healthful way. In my book I share the realization that I lost my purpose when I left teaching and social work. Time to re-find it. It begins here in my kitchen, imagining and creating.
