Reinvention: “The action or process through which something is changed so much that it appears to be entirely new.”

My book, How to Be Old, is essentially a reinvention story. Part of any reinvention process begins with seeing which skills, talents, objects, talismans and other artifacts of a past life can be brought with you in the design of something new. For me this entails curating a “reinvention” wardrobe. One that helps me to perform what I aspire to be in the next evolution of me.

Throughout the many reinventions I have created in my life there have been certain items that represent some core aspect of myself that appears no matter what the new reinvention may be. While downsizing my many racks of clothes to two “essential” racks including coats and recycling the rest, it’s been interesting to note what I have kept. Denim as you know, some iconic pieces from Japanese designers and a smaller collection of my previous very large collection of white shirts. A new reinvention story also implicates a new set of unruled notebooks.

White shirts are like the white, blank pages in a diary, full of potential and ready to re-conceive themselves and become something they never were before. Perhaps I became accustomed to them because throughout the first 12 years of my education I wore them each and every school day. I think though it is more about their potential, their ability to be reinvented and recreated over time, to so eagerly be marked with and receive my imperfections. I admire their transparency. There is no hiding of stains like there can be on other apparel. A reminder about truth I must always take with me.

So we’ll see how my white shirts emerge over the coming year but here’s a little visual memoir of how they showed up in the past.
