My grandson is getting very mobile these days, requiring extra vigilance. My house is a construction zone and I’ve been deep in edits. And so I have completely missed NYFW and will miss all the rest of fashion month. I have to admit I have some nostalgia about sitting in the front row and the rush you feel when photographers run up as you arrive, surround you and take your photo. What I don’t miss is running into bathrooms or a car 5 or 6 times a day to change into what the designer sent you to wear to their show. Everything moves so fast you can’t really enjoy wearing it. Too crazy to spin a dream or a fantasy about yourself wearing it, to feel it against your skin and as you move. When it came to the winter shows, I always appeared in Vogue Street Style because Phil Oh liked the coats I wore. Thanks to @marimekko I’d say I still have a way with a coat. I’ll wait patiently, while living my full life here, for fashion month to end. Then I’ll sit in my beautiful, oversized green velvet armchair with it’s mauve and gold trim. In my mind, I’ll travel to the city, Milan, London, Paris and Shanghai and view the collections having all the time in the world. I’ll find the looks that inspire me. The ones that incite me to write an essay, explore an untapped emotion or do something I’ve ever done before. Isn’t that what most designers hope their clothes will do? There are many ways to view a fashion show whether you can travel to them, are invited to them, or not. One of my favorite designers, Dries van Noten, made a short film, “The Mind Has To Travel,” an exploration of inspiration that comes from within our minds.
