The Magnificent Bird-of-Paradise is a relatively common species around New Guinea, but nobody had thought to film the male display from the female’s perspective, looking down from above, until my colleague Ed Scholes and I pulled it off using remote controlled cameras on an expedition for our Birds-of-Paradise Project (www.birdsofparadiseproject.org) for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Birds-of-Paradise are an amazing example of sexual selection by female choice, where females have selected males with a great variety in appearance and courtship dances leading to incredible diversity within this family.

The forests of New Guinea, including Papua New Guinea and the Indonesia provinces in the western half of New Guinea have the largest remaining rainforest in the Asia-Pacific region, and are very important for protecting biodiversity like birds-of-paradise, and storing carbon against climate change.
