Young babies like you see in this series of wild orangutans never leave their mom’s body for the first few months, and they are dependent on their mothers for up to eight years, the longest dependency of any mammal (except humans). They need all this time to grow up slowly and learn everything they need to survive in their rainforest home. That’s why protecting orangutan habitat is so important, so that the living knowledge of how to survive in the forest is passed on by the mothers to the next generation.
