These several photos are of the same individual who was the dominant male in the area of forest near the research station in Gunung Palung National Park a few years back. When males develop into full sized adults with these big cheek flanges, they become intolerant of other males in their areas. They advertise their territory with loud vocalizations known as “long calls” and will confront any males they meet. I was able to get close and photograph this completely wild individual because of ongoing research efforts by the team from the Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program (@SaveWildOrangutans). They work closely with the National Park and surrounding communities to study wild orangutans and safeguard their habitat.
