Crimson rumped toucanets may be small, but they are supersized gardeners of the forests in which they live. Feeding predominantly on fruits and insects, these birds cover large amounts of territory each day in search of food. As they travel, they leave their droppings on the forest floor which are full of seeds from several species of rainforest trees. Studies have shown that these seeds actually have a greater chance of germinating after passing through the toucanet’s digestive tract than they do without the bird’s help.
