The Mediterranean mussel, also known as the blue mussel has a super power - its byssus threads. These threads are strong and stretchy, allowing the mussel to attach itself to exposed rocky shores without the fear of being washed away. Byssus threads are so strong in fact, that researchers have taken a special interest in them, assessing how they might be used to create items such as body armor or surgical sutures.
