Camouflaged by its markings, the Indian rock python is known for ambushing prey after waiting motionlessly on the ground or dangling from tree branches or even at the openings of bat caves, in the forests of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Nepal. Hunting primarily at night, this snake relies on heat-sensing pits in its upper and lower jaws to aid in detecting prey. Like other snake species, it also uses chemoreception to track prey, flicking its tongue out to gather chemical samples which are analyzed by a specialized organ on the roof of the snake’s mouth.
