Today is a day of mourning for many, a reminder of the beginning of colonization, occupation, dispossession, genocide, trauma and violence towards First Nations People.

It’s a day for paying respects for those who have fallen and lost so much, just like we do on Anzac Day. It’s a day to support those who are mourning, not a day to celebrate.

Before today was officially established as a national holiday and continually celebrated as Australia Day (only 27 years ago) it was long before declared a day of mourning by First Nations People; the oldest continuing living culture in the world, who lived here for over 65,000 years before colonization.

I truly hope we can begin to acknowledge and teach the true history of this country; a country that was already established, owned and occupied by First Nations People. Sovereignty was never ceded.

Systemic racism still exists today, is still causing harm, and needs to be dismantled.

I hope you can find compassion for how this day may make others feel. It is not our lived experience, it is not our place to judge and determine how anyone should feel. It is our role as loving, kind human beings to listen, respect and accept another’s experience without projecting our own or making it about ourselves.

I love so much about this country, the land, the waters, the people, the animals. I enjoy it’s immense beauty with deep respect, gratitude, reverence and acknowledgment of the Traditional Owners of this land.

My love and support goes out to all First Nations People today and everyday. I stand with you always.

I’ll be adding some further information to my stories to read more about the history of this date and why it’s #notthedatetocelebrate
