Giving it to you straight—fasting stresses your body. You want it to be the hormetic kind, which means your body processes low doses of stress over time, so it’s better able to manage big stressors when they happen.

In my new book, “Fast This Way,” I remind people that fasting also can cause more than just physical stress. This is true of all types of fasting. You don’t want to add a lot of life stressors at the same time. That’s not good for your physical or mental health.

When I talked to fasting expert Dr. Alan Goldhamer on episode #780 of Bulletproof Radio, he said fasting in a rested state is the way to go. That’s how you’ll get the most benefits.

Take care of your stress levels by practicing yoga, meditating, exercising—really, whatever helps you find your Zen.

You are not in a race. You are not trying to prove something. More difficult fasts do not equal better results; they won’t automatically get you there more quickly. Make sure that your schedule feels right, and keep in mind that it’s fine to try different styles of fasting and to take breaks from fasting entirely.
