It is said to have started with the Celtic Harvest celebration Samhain, around 2000 years ago. Samhain loosely translates to “summers end”. It was a celebration of the change in season, with a feast to celebrate the harvest. It is believed the veil between the worlds of the living and dead blurred on this day. It was a time where ghosts could return to earth, a time to commune with the dead. Ones ability to make predictions of the future was also increased. Sacred bonfires were lit, sacrifices were made to the deities, costumes worn to disguise themselves from the spirits. Halloween has continued to evolve through Christianity and colonialism to what it is today. We love Halloween, celebrating the changing seasons and any excuse to dress up. This year we opted for a waste free Halloween and we decided to up-cycle our costumes using anything we could find around the house. It’s been a joyous, family bonding, creative experience, which is exactly what Halloween is about for us.
