They’ve been quite fascinating to watch and study, at times making a mess scavenging through trash cans with their spoils strewn about. I dare not shoo them away as they remember their foes and somehow find a way to point out these unfortunate individuals to the flock. Often portrayed as dark omens, they are also cited as helpful messengers, bringers of food, and are among the most highly intelligent of creatures not to mention devoutly loyal as crows mate with the same partner for life. Mysterious and enchanting nonetheless regardless of how they are perceived. . True story: the last day I freely frolicked outside before the pandemic made itself officially known, I was meandering through a stretch of wood by the river. It was the first time I had ever noticed crows there and I had never before witnessed so many congregating all at once. There were quite literally hundreds upon hundreds perched in the bare branches and had they not favored my presence amidst their raucous meeting, they could have easily forced my exit. Thankfully they tolerated me with no thundering cues or warnings and I thanked them for allowing me space to enjoy the scenery. I remember walking away that day wondering what they knew that I did not and feeling humbled that they let me sit in on their secret meeting. Ever since I’ve had a renewed appreciation and respect for their presence and am always ever curious of their understanding of life in its rhythms. . . . .
