Over a decade ago and I was far behind on the newish novelty smartphone that had been inducted into the wild. I owned a Motorola flip phone at the time and was quite content as I had no other paradigm within the technological advances on the mobile frontier. Wonder was not such an effort to discover within the hidden crevices of each day. I learned to fully savour the seconds within them and let moments vividly burn into my memory for the ages. I traveled across the country in a beloved junker of a faithful car with directions written on the back of receipt paper, a worn-out and well-loved atlas with curled pages in tow, and my trusty boom box (the same one from the Marvin Gaye story in Philly) on the passenger seat. There was no GPS and I had no inclination or thought to stop and snap selfies or capture every beautiful moment that grabbed my attention on a phone lest I one day forget. No, I enveloped every jot and tittle with the entirety of my being, and even now I can still jump into those memories as if they were still unfolding before me. The dayglo of magenta, deep orange, lapis blue and golden hues bursting in the sky as I was driving out of Oklahoma into the Texan horizon will forever haunt me. I don’t need photos, the yawp of its holiness takes center stage in my mind. Sometimes I wonder what will happen to the scope of the reel that remains in our heart with all these gadgets that do the job for us. I am grateful for them and yet feel mixed on the topic, but I don’t have a soapbox or any answers to it all, nor do I care for such to be honest. The good ol’ days are not over, they’re just evolving as life and the world around us evolves, and I suppose the challenge, or hearty adventure rather, would be to find the rhythms in the full savouring of our days and envelop the moments within our senses, even still and regardless.
