“But we didn’t pay the piper, so the piper made a new song for the children that promised “a joyous land … where waters gushed and fruit-trees grew.” We didn’t pay the piper, and so the children merrily followed him into a mountain, and a disappearing door shut fast when the last child was inside. Now there are no more children... except for one hobbling boy left behind, who couldn’t dance into the mountain fast enough. There is always one hobbling boy left behind, to describe the song the children followed. He is the poet. And there is always one rat left behind to describe the song the rats followed. The rat is the poet, too.” -Sabrina Orah Mark @sorahmark, It’s Time To Pay The Piper

I was the hobbling girl left behind and I have always been the one who sees the humdrum and the everyday as one big sonnet. It’s all been poetry to me. I see the nuance. And colors. And mystery. I see the unseen that cannot be seen through the pounding of intellect or philosophy or what have you.
.
It was a birthday party and I was following the other children up the immaculate stairway that led to a playroom of pure awe. I quietly beamed and my heart thundered upon beholding the land of milk and honey in the array of toys and treasure chests strewn, but then the Piper came, as Sabrina Orah Mark perfectly paints above, by way of another child, who promptly told me I didn’t belong and slammed the door shut. Bang.
.
I brought a birthday gift to pay the Piper, but didn’t realize it gave me one too: poetry. And while not always born of joy and often sprung from a point blank bang in the heart, it has a timeless mystical element that takes all those pieces, polished and jagged shards alike, and threads them into something beautiful and wondrous. Poetry leaves nothing behind taking every nuance and threading it until what is unseen is revealed in an ethereal tapestry, which wraps around our soul like a warm balm in this weary wild wonderful life. Thank goodness for the poets and storytellers, for @sorahmark and her Piper tellings - they turn our dead things into beauty, and that is why they are the poets.
