Photo by @jimrichardsonng / Staffa and Fingal’s Cave have been known for a long time. Indeed the name Staffa comes from Old Norse; the Vikings thought it reminded them of their stave houses. But it was naturalist Sir Joseph Banks who, in 1772, put it on the hit parade for famous visitors. (He also renamed the cave for Fingal.) Among luminaries coming to ogle were Queen Victoria, Jules Verne, William Wordsworth, and even Alice Liddell. Painters came too, including J.M.W. Turner. But for me it was Thomas Moran who beat the whole bunch with his incredibly atmospheric rendering.
