Photo by @deeptiasthana / Nestled amid the snowcapped Himalaya of Kashmir, Gurez was once part of the ancient Silk Road connecting Kashmir with Kashgar in modern-day China. In its heyday during the 12th century, the valley was known as Dardistan, after the Dard-Shin community who call it home.
The history of the Dard-Shins has been recorded in literature. Greek historian Herodotus, who lived in the fifth century B.C., described them as warrior-like people on the frontier of India. Many of the cultural markers of the Dard-Shins are fast disappearing, including the traditional Shina language, which is now taught in many primary schools.
