This powerful photograph was shot by British photographer @misanharriman on the streets of London during the Black Lives Matter protests in June. In one split second, Harriman captured the then anonymous England U21s hockey player @darcy.bourne, looking directly into the lens and holding a home-made sign. At that very moment, a protestor punched their hand in the air, and the result was a photograph which went viral across the globe.
Hailed as ‘the voice that was missing’ by British Vogue’s @edward_enninful, Harriman has since become the first Black male photographer to shoot the cover of @British Vogue in its 104-year history. This is the first time any of Harriman’s works have gone up for sale, offering a rare opportunity to acquire a piece by one of the most important photographers working today.
An icon of a generation, ‘Why is Ending Racism a Debate?’ will hit Sotheby’s rostrum this October in Harriman’s auction debut, proceeds from which will benefit blood cancer charity @anthonynolancharity and their vital work to diversify the stem cell donor register.
Visit our #London galleries to see the work up-close between 11-14 October.
