There is something profoundly satisfying about Song dynasty (960-1279) black stoneware teabowls. The subtle, sometimes dramatic variegation of their deep glazes and their rich sensual touch have for many centuries seduced Chinese monks, Japanese tea masters and Western studio potters alike who have all reveled in the near mystic communion of losing oneself in a black bowl. The black teabowl, in its simplistic shape and pared down colour, is without question the most abstract in the pantheon of Chinese ceramics. The bowls featured in this short trailer all hail from the Aoyama Studio collection and will be presented in our Monochrome sale on October 9 in Hong Kong.
