‘Votes for Women’

This rare pair of silver and enamel ‘Dutch Doll’ pepperettes in the form of Suffragettes was made in 1920 against the backdrop of the women’s suffrage movement.

Although in Britain female suffrage had been discussed for several decades in the 19th century, it was not until 1903 when Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter founded the Women's Social and Political Union that positive steps were taken in demands for Votes for Women. With their efforts halted by the outbreak of the war, the movement finally succeeded in part, with the passing of the Representation of the People Act, which extended suffrage to over 8 million women above the age of 30.
