サザビーズさんのインスタグラム写真 - (サザビーズInstagram)「Game, set and match! Sir John Lavery's 'Tennis Under the Orange Trees, Cannes' was painted in 1929, on one of the artist's regular sojourns on the French Riviera. It was during the twenties that the fast modern game emerged, and Lavery vividly captures the scene before him. His stepdaughter, Alice, was an enthusiastic player and it is not unlikely that the figure of the young woman on the left, reaching up to serve, is intended to represent her. Mauve shadows help to describe the space of the court; the figures in the distance are cursorily treated; and providing a decorative framing device are the orange trees with their ripening fruit. One of 18 works from the collection of businessman Sir Michael Smurfit, the painting will be offered in our Irish Art sale on 9 September, and is on view in our London galleries this weekend.
