A rooftop view from the former Polissya Hotel in the center of Pripyat shows the proximity of the ill-fated Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant to this former home of 50,000. Today, Pripyat stands a ghost town overrun by nature. Once a beautiful town by Soviet standards, Pripyat was built to house Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s workers and their families.

Since this photograph was taken, a New Safe Confinement has been constructed around the remains of Reactor No. 4. The confinement includes the concrete sarcophagus that was built shortly after the disaster, as well as a steel arch-shaped building planned to contain the radiation for the next hundred years.
