At a Russian bakery in 1991, a shopkeeper awaits customers in the dawn of capitalism. Accustomed to subsidized food, Russians were shocked when eggs, bread, butter and milk prices began to follow market trends instead of government regulation after the fall of the Soviet Union.

I’m traveling to Austria today to Festival La Gacilly-Baden, where this image—and more than 60 others in two exhibitions of my work—will be displayed outdoors, alongside photography from many renowned artists, among the picturesque town and gardens of Baden. I’ll be celebrating a weekend full of photography, leading up to World Photography Day on August 19.
