An Aboriginal inhabitant of “The Corner” relaxes on a coastal rock covered by blooming lichen. “The Corner,” a small settlement of 66 people on Cape Barren Islands, is 90% Aboriginal.
Today, there are disputes as to if there are any surviving full-blooded Aboriginals, mainly as a result of brutal annihilation campaigns by colonizers in the 19th century. Today, an estimated 6,000 people in Tasmania have Aboriginal lineage, many of them living on the Furneaux Islands (Flinders, Clarke and Cape Barren). Though still facing racism, they have recently begun to regain their cultural identity.
