Then-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin kisses the body of Patriarch Alexy II, a favored ally, at his funeral in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Alexy’s successor, Metropolitan Kirill (in white crown), stands close. Putin has claimed the church is as vital to Russia’s security as its nuclear shield.

Although very difficult to access, I’ve had the chance to photograph Putin a few times throughout my career. This image, taken in 2008, shows that Putin, once a member of the KGB, now bows to the role of the church in modern Russian society.

With the recent poisoning of Russian opposition leader and prominent critic of the Kremlin, Alexey Navalny, Russia is once again making headlines, causing many to question the Kremlin’s role in the occurrence. A self-proclaimed man of faith, Putin denies any ties between his administration and the event.
