On assignment @natgeo and as a team member of the expedition led by Ralf Dujmovits, on August 23rd 2011 Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, Maxut Zhumayev and Vassily Pivtstov reached the summit of K2 and completed the ascent of all 8000 meter mountains without oxygen, together with Darek Zaluski who stood on his 5th 8000er. Hours before making this picture, eager to reach the top, focused on photographing, climbing with a heavy load, I realized there was no room for error when swept and buried under the avalanches. Perhaps one of the hardest decisions I faced was to turn back during our final summit push. While on assignment @natgeo I felt committed to return with great images rather than reaching the top. This 14 minute exposure was made from Advanced Base Camp, more than two miles away. And I still wish I had been with my teammates on the summit that day, I still wish I was part of that light glowing with the stars…. But I would Not have captured this moment that sums why we climb. We were one…. as a team….
