Bundled in their down suits, Ralf Dujmovits and Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner study the route up toward Camp IV and the beginning of the “death zone”. That is the point, above 8000 meters, at which mountaineers who opt to climb without bottled oxygen face the limits of the human body. “What makes a difference in not having oxygen is your ability to fend off cold,” Dujmovits says. “You freeze from the inside out, because you can’t burn enough fat to stay warm.”
On assignment @ナショナルジオグラフィック and as a team member of the 2011 expedition to K2, here @pyhrgas is ready to start the ascent while @ralfdujmovits gives her a belay. Below us the almost vertical walls and far-away glaciers we trekked, get lost in the clouds.

Este es el punto, por encima de los 8000 metros de elevación, en el cual los montañistas que deciden ascender sin el uso de oxígeno suplementario se exponen a los limites de tolerancia del cuerpo humano. “La gran diferencia al no utilizar oxígeno radica en la habilidad de tolerar el frío” Dice Ralf. “Uno se congela desde adentro, porque no es posible quemar suficiente grasa para mantener el cuerpo caliente”
Contratado por @ナショナルジオグラフィック e integrando la expedición al monte K2, @pyhrgas reinicia el ascenso mientras @ralfdujmovits la asegura con la cuerda. Debajo nuestro las paredes casi verticales y los glaciares ya distantes que transitamos, se pierden entre las nubes.
