Painted in 1980, ‘Latin from Manhattan…the Bronx Actually’ is an extraordinary example of Barkley L. Hendricks’s unrivaled ability to capture compelling personalities with remarkable specificity. Known for his mesmerizing depictions of cool, stylish and self-aware Black subjects against monochrome backgrounds, Hendricks revolutionized portraiture in late 20th century American art.

This enigmatic work – referred to by the late artist as “Silky” – is one of only a handful of paintings by Hendricks that depicts Latin women, and remained in his collection until it was included in ‘The Magic City’ – an important exhibition organized by Trevor Schoonmaker at Brent Sikkema Gallery in 2000 that paved the way for the artist’s widely-celebrated retrospective, ‘Birth of the Cool’ just eight years later.
