For over 50 years, between 1596 and 1647, diplomat Philipp Hainhofer asked all the influential people he met across Europe - emperors, princes, princesses, diplomats, generals – to commission artworks for this “friendship book”, and as a result, around 100 drawings with beautiful and diverse motifs have been compiled into this extraordinary album. When Hainhofer died in 1647, Duke August the Younger (after whom the library is named) tried to buy this book but failed. However, last year this album came to Sotheby’s attention and, after much research, the connection to the library in Wolfenbüttel was uncovered and a private sale was arranged.
