Kara Walker’s 'Fons Americanus' is a 13-metre tall working fountain in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, which was unveiled earlier this year. The artist is best-known for her harrowing vignettes of violence and trauma taken from the history of the American South, that invite questions regarding the nature of representing race in America. Her version of the Victoria Memorial, the monument to the British Empire in front of Buckingham Palace, replaces elements of the original with stinging, site-specific details that confronted the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade.
